Why Writing Still Matters in the Age of ChatGPT

It’s been a long time since I wrote anything here. Reason is the rise of Gen AI tools. Ever since ChatGPT came, I started to feel that the kind of articles I write are not relevant anymore. I’ll start to think about a topic, mostly technical, and then it’s actually just a prompt away. So I didn’t get enough motivation to write anything. I’m kind of having a dilemma if writing is not going to be the same anymore.

It’s a common notion to incorporate whichever new tool that comes out of nowhere, to be brought into your workflow and make your productivity higher. But writing isn’t one such thing. It’s not about productivity. It’s not about business. Writing comes from the need to express something. So it doesn’t make sense to write more with AI.

It’s not that I haven’t looked for ways to incorporate ChatGPT into my writing. But it doesn’t make me feel any good. Probably I can write one new tech article everyday with just a prompt. It’s still valid because the scenario is something that I’ll think and only the article is an outcome of that. But the words are not mine.

Not just the great writers, but every single person who set out to express, leaves a signature in their writing. It’s embedded in their words, it could be even the mistakes that they make, but it’s a signature. When you read the quote “The greatest teacher, failure is.”, you will immediately recognize that it’s Master Yoda (as if Master Yoda is a writer!). You feel with every book you read, some are engaging to some people and boring to the others, just like human characters. I always feel like there is some life in writings, a part of the author embedded like a Horcrux

ChatGPT is a great tool of research. Maybe great for business purpose content writing. But it’s far from what a human can offer. Humans are filled with opinions and conflicts just like how I’m overwhelmed with the AI tools here now. This is what makes writings come to life is my opinion.

All these days I refrained from writing opinions and always chose to write facts, that’s why you see more tech tutorials than anything else in my blog. The reason I avoided opinions is, opinions change over time, as we grow, but writings are imprinted and exists forever. I was afraid to look back at an opinion of mine that has changed. But now I realize, that’s the human part of me. Facts will be taken care by ChatGPT, only opinions have to be from me.
